Track a transfer in progress

What each status means, which clock is running, and the two endings people mistake for failure.

Updated 02 Sept 2026

A transfer is a conversation between two registrars with a registry in the middle, and most of it happens without you. Knowing which step it is on tells you whether to wait or to act.

Where to look

The domain carries a status while the move is in progress, and it is the status rather than the elapsed time that says what is happening.

The clocks that are running

Seven days to unlock. If the name is still locked at the old registrar a week after the order is paid, the transfer fails and has to be started again. This is the commonest failure and the easiest to prevent.

Five days to object. Once the request is in, the losing registrar has five days to refuse it. Silence completes the transfer — so no answer is the good outcome, not the worrying one.

Two endings mistaken for failure

A year that seems to disappear. An expired name is not deleted at once — a registrar has about 45 days to delete it, and if it does not, the registry treats it as renewed. Renew at the old registrar inside that window and then transfer, and the transfer year replaces the one you just bought instead of adding to it. Transfer first, or wait; do not renew and move in the same fortnight.

The name is transferred but still not working. The transfer moves the registration, not the ডিএনএস. If nothing was pointed anywhere before the move completed, the name now resolves to nothing at all — changing the nameservers is the remaining step, and it takes minutes.

The transfer failed and I was not told why.

Work down what can block a transfer — the lock, the 60-day rule, a stale code, an unreachable registrant address, an expired name. If all five pass, send us the rejection wording from support; it usually names the rule even when it does not explain it.

Can I cancel a transfer I started?

Until it completes, yes — from the panel where it was ordered. After it completes the name is at the new registrar and coming back is another transfer, subject to the 60-day wait like any other.
