Cancel a transfer
There is a window, and which side of it you are on decides whether cancelling is a click or another transfer.

A transfer can be stopped up to the moment it completes, and not one minute after. What that takes depends on which of the two clocks is running.

A transfer somebody else started on your domain
This is the one to act on quickly. We email the registrant when a transfer is requested, and that message carries a cancel link valid for five days. Clicking it stops the move.
If that window has closed and the name has moved, turning the transfer lock back on is what stops the next one. A domain that moved without your knowing is worth treating as a compromised account rather than a paperwork error.
After it completes
The name is at the other registrar and coming back is a fresh transfer — with the 60-day wait that follows any transfer, so it cannot be done immediately.
Do I get the money back?
For a transfer that never completed, yes. For one that completed, no — the year was added to the name and you still have it, wherever the name now lives.
Will cancelling lose the year I paid for?
A cancelled transfer never added one, so there is nothing to lose. The name keeps whatever registration it already had, and the expiry date does not move.
