Why your email lands in spam

SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and what to do when Gmail still refuses.

Modern mail providers make three checks before they trust a sender. All three are published for you when your domain uses our nameservers.

  • SPF lists the servers allowed to send for your domain. Only one SPF record may exist; merge, never duplicate.
  • DKIM signs each message. A mismatch means something rewrote the message in transit — usually a forwarding rule.
  • DMARC tells receivers what to do when SPF or DKIM fails. Start at p=none, read the reports, then tighten.

Reputation is per-domain and takes days to build. Send to people who reply, avoid bulk campaigns from your main domain in the first fortnight, and never buy a list — one spam complaint per thousand is enough to undo a month of good behaviour.

Does a business mailbox help?

It helps in one specific way: mail sent from a mailbox on our email hosting leaves through servers whose reputation we maintain, rather than through a home connection or a shared script. It does not fix a missing SPF record, and nothing does except adding one.
