Auto-renew, renewing by hand, and why renewing early never costs you the time you have already bought.

A domain is rented, not bought, and the rent is annual. Everything else about renewals follows from that one fact.
Let it renew itself
Auto-renew is not a promise that the renewal happens — it is a promise that we will try and tell you. A card that fails or an invoice nobody opens still ends with an expired domain, which is why an overdue invoice is worth reading once before it is urgent.
Renewing by hand, and renewing early
You can renew at any time, for more than one year at once. The new term is added to what you already have rather than replacing it, so renewing eleven months early costs you nothing in time.
Multi-year renewal is the cheapest protection there is against forgetting. It also fixes the price for those years, which matters more than it used to: registry prices move.
What if I renew after the expiry date?
Usually still fine, and usually still at the ordinary price, because most extensions have a grace period after expiry. The website and mail stop during it — what happens when a domain expires sets out the stages and what each one costs.
Can I renew a domain registered somewhere else?
No. Renewal happens at the registrar holding the name. Transfer it to us first — a transfer adds a year of its own, so on a name near expiry the transfer is the renewal.
