Change who owns a domain

Three fields turn an edit into a change of ownership — and which route you pick decides whether the name is locked for 60 days.

Updated 02 Sept 2026

Correcting a phone number is administration. Changing the name, the company or the email address on the registrant is a change of ownership, and it runs a formal process with a consequence worth choosing deliberately.

The three fields

Only these trigger it: name, company name and email address on the registrant contact. Address, telephone and everything else can be corrected freely — so fixing a typo in a street name is not the same errand as this one, and it is worth knowing which you are on before you start.

The choice you will be asked to make

Both parties approve by email. The old and new registrant each get a message and click to agree. Slower, needs two working mailboxes — and it lets you opt out of the 60-day transfer lock.

The registrar approves on your behalf. Faster and needs nobody to read email, but the 60-day lock is applied and cannot be opted out of.

If you might move the domain to another registrar in the next two months, take the slower route. If you will not, the faster one costs nothing.

Before you start

The domain has to be unlocked and not suspended. A suspended name refuses contact changes outright, and clearing the suspension comes first.

Make sure both mailboxes work if you are taking the email route. An approval sent to an address nobody reads is a change that quietly never happens — and the old address is the one people have usually already lost.

Is this the same as moving the domain to another account?

No, and the difference is worth keeping straight. Moving between HostBari accounts changes who manages the name here and the registry sees nothing. This changes who the registry records as the owner, which is the thing that decides a dispute.

We are selling the business. Which one do we need?

This one, and take the email route so the buyer is not locked out of moving it. Do it before the handover rather than after: once the old registrant address stops working, the approval it needs cannot be delivered.
