Choosing between shared hosting and a VPS

The honest version: most sites do not need a VPS, and the ones that do usually know why.

24 Aug 2026

The advice to "upgrade to a VPS" is given far too early. Shared hosting on modern NVMe with a proper cache serves a surprising amount of traffic, and a VPS you do not administer is slower than shared hosting you do not have to.

Stay on shared hosting when

Your site is a brochure, a blog, or a shop with a few hundred orders a month; you do not need software outside what cPanel installs; and you would rather not think about kernel updates.

Move to a VPS when

You need root — a queue worker, a non-standard PHP extension, Redis you control, or a Node service alongside PHP. Or your traffic is spiky in a way that shared limits punish.

What actually changes

You gain isolation and control, and you take on patching, monitoring and backups. Budget an hour a month for maintenance; the ones that get compromised are always the ones nobody has logged into for a year.
